Gillian Carrington is a British barrister and a co-author of Sweet & Maxwell’s Information Rights. She has also contributed to Halsbury’s Laws. She is one of our expert speakers for our courses: Information Right’s Overview and Brexit: An Introduction.
Tell us about yourself: What is your expertise, and how did you become an expert in the area?
I am a regulatory and litigation lawyer and I specialize in cross-border cases. At the Bar in London I specialized in environmental regulation and public law. I then moved over to the City where the work was more international. I now live and work in Berlin, where I work with a lot of startups, with a particular focus on the GDPR and related regimes. I also advise on Brexit to an increasing extent as I am a German-speaking English-qualified lawyer working in the heart of the Single Market!
Online training in the legal industry is relatively new in Hong Kong – why did you take a chance and become a speaker for Legal Beagle?
Legal Beagle is a forward-thinking, innovative company. Our paths crossed in the course of business, I had some relevant experience and I really wanted to work for them. As the past few months have taught us, working online is the future. It has been a great collaboration.
Why is/are the topic(s) you speak on (featured on the Legal Beagle platform) so important?
Information Rights by Gillian Carrington
For Information Rights, I wanted to talk about the all-important rules around data privacy and data protection and I also wanted to widen the focus a little to take a look at other types of information rights. We tend to talk about these rights as though they were invented 25 years ago but that is really not the case!
Brexit: An Introduction by Gillian Carrington
For Brexit, I wanted to start with an introduction to this massive topic as it will have a huge impact on anyone doing business with companies in the UK and EU.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
It’s great to be working with Hong Kong and a Hong Kong company. I am a huge fan!
